PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: The Centre's flagship rooftop solar initiative, aimed at accelerating India's shift to renewable energy, has helped more than lakhs of households reduce their electricity bills to near zero.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has helped nearly 7.7 lakh households in India to bring their electricity bill to zero, informed Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

"As on December 9, 2025, a total of 19,45,758 RTS (rooftop solar) systems have been installed across the country, benefitting 24,35,196 households," PTI quoted Naik.
The central government scheme offers twin benefits, the first being a shift to renewable energy resource, and the second being reduction of energy bills.
What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
The Centre launched PM Surya Ghar in February 2024 to achieve rooftop solar (RTS) installations in one crore households in the residential sector by FY 2026-27, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore.
The central government scheme offers free electricity to Indian households. As per the scheme, registered beneficiaries of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana will be provided with a subsidy to install solar panels on their roofs. The subsidy will cover up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels. The scheme is expected to benefit 1 crore households across India.
PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: What is The Eligibility?
The household must be an Indian citizen and own a house with a roof suitable for the installation of a solar panel. It is also important to have a valid electricity connection, and the owner must not have availed any other subsidy scheme for solar panel.
