The Unique Identification Authority of India has now made it significantly easier to update major details on your Aadhaar card online directly from your home. After this upgrade, several demographic changes, like name, address, date of birth and mobile number, can now be done online without the need to visit an enrolment centre. However, biometric changes such as fingerprints, iris scans or photographs still require a visit.

What online updates are available?
You can now use the Aadhaar self-service portal to request changes for:
- Name change or correction on Aadhaar.
- Address update or correction on Aadhaar.
- Date of birth update on Aadhaar.
- Mobile number update linked to Aadhaar.
These changes can be submitted through the online portal, making it quicker and more convenient than ever to keep your Aadhaar details accurate.
What still requires a centre visit?
While the online system covers most demographic updates, changes still needing in-person attention include the biometric updates, which include fingerprint, iris, and photograph. Even gender change or correction in certain cases will require a visit to the enrolment centre.
Also for major demographic corrections where document verification is more complex. For these, you will still need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.
Step-by-step: How to update your Aadhaar online
Step 1: Visit the UIDAI official website and go to the Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP).
Step 2: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and get OTP on your registered mobile.
Step 3: Log in and select the type of update-name, address, date of birth, or mobile number.
Step 4: Upload required supporting documents (proof of identity and proof of address as applicable).
Step 5: Submit the request. You will receive a URN (Update Request Number), which lets you track the status of your update online.
Free address update till 14 July 2026
UIDAI has announced that updating the address online is free until 14 July 2026. For other changes like name or date of birth, a fee is applicable, which is typically Rs. 75 to Rs. 125.
Updating the Aadhaar card is important because many government schemes, subsidies and financial services are linked to Aadhaar authentication. Incorrect or outdated details may lead to delays or ineligibility for benefits.
Some Tips For Users For Updating Aadhaar
- Before you begin, keep digital copies of your supporting documents handy, like scanned or photo
- Make sure your mobile number is already linked to Aadhaar so you can receive OTPs.
- After submission, use the URN to check the update status regularly.
- For biometric or major changes, schedule your visit in advance to avoid waiting time.
- If you update your address online, state-wise proof may be required, like a utility bill or bank statement.
